Unlocking Industrial Potential of Digital Twin

Digital Twin Technology is one among the top 10 strategic technology trends named by Gartner Inc. in 2017.

Digital Twin is a multi-physical, multi-scale and probabilistic simulation model of a complex product. It uses updated sensors and physical models to mirror physical life in the digital world and vice (Durao et al., 2018)

Digital Twin concept represents the convergence of the physical and the virtual world where every industrial product will get a dynamic digital representation.

Throughout the product development life cycle, right from the design phase to the deployment phase, organizations can have a complete digital foot print of their products.

These ‘connected digital things’ generate data in real time, and this helps businesses in better analyze and predict the problems in advance or give early warnings, prevent downtime, develop new opportunities and even plan better products for the future at lower costs by using simulations.

Digital Twins which incorporates Big Data, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and Internet of Things are key in Industry 4.0 and are predominantly used in the Industrial Internet of Things, engineering, and manufacturing business space

A 2020 study by Research and Markets indicates:

  • Up to 89% of all IoT platforms will include digital twins by 2025
  • Digital twinning will be a standard IoT feature by 2027
  • Nearly 36% of executives across a variety of industries understand the benefits of digital twinning, with about half of them planning to use it in their operations by 2028

    Biography

    Dr. Santosh Rane is currently working in Sardar Patel College of Engineering, Mumbai. He worked as a Dean Academics in SPCE, Mumbai (2019-2022) He is an Associate Director of Maharashtra State at FELA- Federation of Educational Leaders and Administrators. He is also Sr Editor at FELA. He is member of Governing Council SAE India WS, Board Member of FELA, Fellow of IIIE, Chairman of IIIE-SPCE Mumbai Chapter He has completed M.Tech and Ph.D. from VJTI, Mumbai. Dr. Santosh Rane is Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma from Indian Statistical Institute. He is also a certified Supply Chain Management Executive from Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He has also completed PGC program in Advanced Project Management from SPJIMR, Mumbai. Dr. Santosh Rane has a versatile experience of 30 years. With this enriched experience he is a corporate trainer and consultant in top MNC’s where he has guided more than 350 Business Excellence projects. Along with above mentioned feats, Dr. Santosh Rane has wide research experience. He has more than 115 publications and more than 1545 Google Scholar citations on his credit (H10 index 28, H index-20). He has also filed 14 patents (Filed 9 patents, granted patents 6). He has successfully guided 5 PhD scholars and 30 MTech Scholars. He is recipient of 13 awards which includes National Fellowship Award IIIE, SAE India Foundation National Level Campion Award, National Productivity Award Platinum Grade, Best Paper Awards. He is often invited by various prestigious events and programs for expert talks. He has conducted 60 sessions in Faculty Development Programmes in various institutions including SVNIT Surat, MNIT Jaipur, VNIT Nagpur, VJTI Mumbai, COE Pune He has also conducted 64 sessions for students for esteemed institutions including SPJIMR, Mumbai, VNIT Nagpur, SVNIT Surat , VJTI, Mumbai. He was invited as Jury for Process Improvement PI award at L&T. He was also invited by CII as a Jury for National level Six Sigma Competition on 28-29 th Sept 2021 and Jury for CII MILCA Award on 27-28 th Jan 2022. Dr Rane was invited by Swinburne University Malaysia to deliver Expert Talk on Unlocking Industrial Potential of Digital Twin. Dr Santosh Rane was invited to conduct session in European Commission approved Erasmus+ Project Central of Capacity building and exchange towards attaining Technological Research and modernizing Academic Learning in European Universities to conduct Session on Exploring Block Chain Potentials to Transform Business Operations 8 th July 2021 Dr. Santosh Rane is a reviewer of Scopus indexed Journals of Elsevier, Taylor and Francis, Emerald, Springer Publications where he has reviewed more than 30 research articles. He has organized 13 National Level Events which includes Symposium, Conclave, workshops, STTP, Seminars He worked as Advisory Committee member and Key Note Speaker for International Conferences. He is also Editorial Board Member for Int. Journal of Supply Chain and Inventory Management, Inderscience Publishers. He is a member of Professional Bodies like SAE, IIIE , ISTE, ISNT, IET, NCQM. Dr Rane has administrative experience to work in various committees constituted by AICTE, DTE and Univ. of Mumbai He also worked as Chairman of Examination Committee, Chairman of Website Committee, Chairman of Startup Cell SPCE, Ph.D. Programme Coordinator for Mechanical Engineering, Member Secretary of SPCE Alumni Committee, Nidhi Prayas Project Coordinator, Faculty Advisor of SPCE Racing Team, Faculty Advisor of IIIE-SPCE student chapter He is working honorary as Advisory Board Member at Multinational Company named IDS Inc. He is mentor for Govt. Polytechnic Jalgaon. He is a Research Mentor for SJCEM. He received Certification of Recognition from the Academic Council of uLektz as one of the Top 20 Eminent Deans in India for the year 2020
